Wife was just diagnosed. What should I expect.
Hi, my wife was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes and is having a hard time with the diagnososis. Ive been trying to reassure her that its something that happens and that its not her fault, but she struggled with getting overwhelmed before the pregnancy and all the hormones hasnt made that better.
Im writing this in hopes of getting some advice as to what I can do to make this easier or at the least help her through this.
Ive been doing some research since she failed the first blood test and I at least think for the most part the foods we have been eating are pretty much the diet its looking for. The only thing that I see needs switching is too whole grains.
In a typical day she will eat a banana for breakfast, usually a sandwich for lunch, some snacks throughout the day (carrots, tortilla chips with salsa sometimes, granola, trailmix), and dinner kinda varies. Typically we have meat (pork, chicken, ground beef) alongside a vegetable or sometimes with pasta.
Shes already sacrificed alot for the pregnancy (she hasnt eaten sushi since finding out and she loves sushi, no undercooked meats like steak or hamburgers, no deli meats) and i really dont want her to be restricted much further than she has to be.
Theres no one in either of our families who had this before. I have a cousin who had it (adopted so they arent blood related) but they live halfway across the world and they apparently didnt find out about having it until after giving birth.
With that all said a couple questions.
I know alot of what im seeing is coming down to grams and serving sizes. Should i invest in a kitchen scale for that? Should i take her weight and size into account. shes allways been "dainty" i guess is the word. Just a small girl, very short and thin so im not sure if i should adjust for that.
Is there any foods that are especially important to avoid that might not be commonly avoided? She stopped eating desserts like icecream and such after failing the first test.
Any advice for helping to console her and reassuring her that its not her fault this happened?
Any general a advice for getting through this?
Thank you and sorry for any typos or misspellings on this post. Im typing all this up on my phone.
Edit: thanks everyone for responding. We are waiting for a referal from her OBGYN for the nutritionist. I really appreciate everyones thoughts and advice. I have alot to think about and look for her. I especially appreciate the advice on helping to keep her spirits up. She carrying my child and I love her so I just want to do all I can for her.
