Were Michael and his siblings exposed to Domestic Violence (between parents)?

The Jackson Family

So in at least one of La Toya's early 90s talk show rounds she mentioned that Michael told her that he witnessed Joseph hitting his mother Katherine (1:15) but she hadn't seen it herself. There's also a video of the locals in Gary who say that Joe beat Katherine amongst other abuses.

Katherine has admitted to one incident of DV between her and Joe. This is an excerpt from Miss Katherine's 1990 memoir 'My Family, The Jacksons' (pg 93) :

For two people who are so different from each other in temperament -- Joe is moody, excitable, a loner; I’m the opposite -- we had enjoyed many harmonious years. In fact, in our first two decades together, our marriage had been in danger only once. That crisis had occurred shortly after we were married, when Rebbie was still an infant.
One day Joe had returned from working the swing shift at Inland Steel, and had gone to bed. Rebbie was already asleep in her crib. I went into the backyard to hang some clothes on the line, saw my neighbor Edna Humphrey in her backyard, and walking over to chat with her. A few minutes later, Joe stormed into the backyard in his pajamas.
“Why don’t you come in and see about the baby?!” he yelled. “She’s screaming.”
Joe returned inside. I was a few feet behind him.
“I didn’t know she had awakened,” I said.
Suddenly Joe lost it. He wheeled around and struck me on the right cheek. My cheek went numb.
Enraged, I grabbed the first thing I could get my hands on -- a ceramic bottle warmer -- and flung it at him. It shattered on his right arm, slashing him just above the elbow.
“Look what you did to me!” he yelled, holding his arm as blood dripped on the floor.
“The nerve of you to hit me!” I screamed. as I tried to get him to stand still so I could examine the gash.
I phoned Joe’s mother, who took him to the emergency room. The cut required stitches. Joe also had to wear his arm in a sling.
“What happened to you?” his co-workers asked him the next day.
“I got in an accident,” was all Joe would say.

That was the first and last time that Joe Jackson struck me.
As ugly as the incident was, I managed to put it behind me. Our marriage was young and otherwise good, and we were starting to build our family. In addition, I was committed to keeping my childhood vow to stay with my husband, so that our children would be reared by both of their natural parents

Much like she downplayed the abuse with the children, she might have downplayed the DV. The Michael biopic and the mini series left some of the audience with a sense DV may have happened between them. However if we take her word for it that she put an end to the violence with retaliation, this is corroborated with what Margeret Maldonado said in her book. When she sought Katherine's help when Jermaine was beating her, she repeated the above story and told her to 'draw blood' to end the beatings. When Preggy complained about the beatings Jermaine gave to their kids together Katherine took a 'spare the rod spoil the child approach'.

The healthy option would be to leave a violent relationship whether or not you 'retaliate' so that kids do not absorb this as an acceptable dynamic. Many people view Katherine as someone powerless to stop the abuse towards her own children but she had enough to stop Joe per her memoir and I find that difficult. The miniseries and biopic both have a scene with Katherine standing up to Joe for hitting the boys but in reality she always publically defending Joe so I think this may be just to appease the audience.

No one but La Toya has said that the children witnessed DV to my knowledge but half the siblings have potentially repeateed the cycle. Jackie, Jermaine and Randy have all been accused of domestic violence with their partners with Randy doing time in a DV rehab program. Then of course La Toya's husband was brutally violent to her. Maybe it's my own hang up but it's hard to reconcile beating a girl child but telling her not to accept violence from her future husband or modelling to your songs that is okay behaviour.

I wonder if Michael witnessed this sort of violence (per La Toya's account) and did that deepen a hatred towards Joseph? I think the best that he could do was empower her, and he did so by giving her leverage in terms of owning half of Hayvenhurt and taking care of her financially but she never divorced him. Maybe in an effort not to 'out' Katherine he never spoke about it only speaking of anti-violence generally or in the parent-child dynamic.
