Has anyone actually helped their kid improve reading speed without making reading feel like homework?

My daughter likes books, but when she reads on her own she gets stuck on individual words a lot. By the middle of a page she's usually tired or distracted, even when she actually likes the story.

I've been looking for ways to help without turning reading into another daily battle. I came across an article that suggested a few pretty basic things like short timed reading sessions, using a bookmark to guide the eyes across the line, and reducing distractions.

We've been trying the 10-minute sessions for a bit and I think keeping them short is helping more than anything else. She doesn't immediately complain when I suggest reading anymore, which I'll take as progress.

I'm curious what worked for other parents. Did reading speed eventually improve naturally with practice, or was there a specific exercise/routine that made a noticeable difference?
