This side dish somehow stole all the attention from the main course.
Dinner was supposed to be chicken, but somehow nobody cared about the chicken by the time we sat down.
I had some potatoes that needed to be used, so they got cut up and tossed in with a little oil and seasoning. Nothing special. The chicken was already taking most of my attention, so I wasn't expecting much from the potatoes.
When they were done, I put everything on the table and took one of the potatoes while I was serving.
That was a mistake.
I went back for another one. Then my wife tried one and immediately asked if there were more. Five minutes later, we were both picking at them instead of eating the actual dinner we'd spent most of the time preparing.
The chicken was fine. Honestly, it was perfectly fine. It just didn't stand a chance.
There was something about the potatoes being browned on the outside but still soft inside that made them disappear ridiculously fast. Even the last few sitting on the plate somehow kept getting picked at.
I ended up laughing because I'd spent way more time thinking about the main dish, and the thing nobody was supposed to care about was what we were fighting over.
Next time I'm making more potatoes.
