Dr. Diana Drumm on how acupuncture fits into a holistic care plan

Dr. Diana Drumm, a holistic vet who's been practicing acupuncture on pets since 2005, shared some patient stories that make a pretty compelling case for it.

Acupuncture works by targeting specific points to help ease pain and support the body's own healing, and according to Dr. Drumm, it's not just for pain management. She's used it alongside diet changes and other supplements to help patients dealing with things like seizures, arthritis-related mobility loss, chronic GI issues, and even as a supportive therapy during cancer treatment, easing chemo side effects like nausea and low appetite.

A few of her stories stood out:

  • An older mixed-breed dog with mobility issues was seen playing and wrestling again after just a few sessions
  • A senior poodle with recurring seizures went over a year without an episode after starting a combined acupuncture and dietary protocol
  • A cat with feline asthma was weaned off a daily inhaler entirely after months of consistent treatment

She also notes cats tend to relax quickly once they get used to the needles, which surprises a lot of people who assume it'd be stressful for them.

Obviously every pet and condition is different, and this isn't a replacement for standard veterinary care, but as a complementary option it's worth asking your vet about if your pet could use it.
