Animancy and the debate around AI in our society (repost because I did not explain myself)
So I go absolutely grilled by the sub because I did not explain myself, and I do agree I should have explained myself.
SO HERE ARE MY ACTUAL THOUGHTS:
I think people are conflating the profit motive and the control finance and capital has VS. the real benefits AI has. Assuming most people on this subreddit live in the ''West'' where the influence of capital is strong, I can definitely see the reasons for the reluctance in AI adoption, because you and I both know the people calling the shots are not doing it for our benefits. We see AI being used for surveillance, for military applications in Gaza, etc. And frankly, the potential job losses are not going to be compensated for.
However, AI does have real benefits for automation, research, and increasing productivity. For example, I see a lot of my colleagues in Medicine and Pharmacy using UptoDate AI to search topics that would be too long to read when treating patients or to brush up on pharmacotherapy, etc. Ass
The parallel I see is that people see AI as the boogeyman, just like animancy, because they see it being used by the elites, for the elites. Animancy in POE 1 is commissioned by nobles and the political elites (house doemenel) and facing very strong backlash because the masses cannot see the difference between institutions using the technology in a bad way vs. the technology itself. And they see that animancy has been used on people against their will too.
And animancy does have clear drawbacks when applied without oversight, just like AI (stalking, cyber-hacking, giving instructions on how to do criminal shit like creating viruses which is actually a real thing). While the Leaden Key sabotaged animancy, it did produce some undesirable outcomes and events on its own because animancers applied their knowledge unethically without considering their lack of knowledge (The creation of wichts for example)
So the paralells:
- People hating on the technology itself INSTEAD of how dysfunctional the institutions that are democratizing the technology are
- Focusing on the real bad outcomes of AI (The pressure on the energy grid, pollution, job losses) while ignoring real benefits it could bring if it were used in a collectivized manner for the people by the people.
- And frankly a lot of ignorance on how the technology really works, the good it can do, the bad it can do, and what it cannot do
BTW so long as AI is in control of the elites I am very much AGAINST it. Fuck AI as pushed by capital-controlled countries. I am not some tech-billionaire shill before people attack me for it.
