CAT 2026 - Is an MBA worth it if my only goal is IB?
Preparing for CAT 2026 and trying to figure out whether an MBA makes sense for me.
Profile:
10th: 92%, 12th: 84% (State Board)
BBA Financial Markets, 8.98 CGPA, Institute Rank 1 (Tier 2/2.5 college)
CFA Level 2 cleared
~1.5 years as a Financial Analyst
My end goal is Investment Banking. Despite CFA L2 + finance education + relevant workex, breaking into IB directly has been difficult.
From what I’ve read, IB placements are extremely competitive even at IIM A/B/C, and candidates with top UG brands + strong academics seem to have an advantage.
So my question is: if I don’t get A/B/C, is an MBA still worth it for IB?
How realistic are IB opportunities from IIM K/I/M, SPJIMR, IIFT, XLRI, MDI, etc. for someone with my profile?
And if IB is the main goal, would it make more sense to continue working in US CRE and try to make a lateral move rather than spend 2 years + ₹20–30L on an MBA?
Would really appreciate honest opinions from people in these colleges or working in IB/finance.
