Is compulsive pornography use a real addiction? What does the neuroscience actually show?

This is genuinely contested and I want to be honest about that.

The DSM-5 doesn't include it as a formal addiction. The ICD-11 includes "compulsive sexual behavior disorder." The scientific literature is divided — partly over methodology, partly over what "addiction" technically requires.

What is documented and largely agreed on:

- Cue-induced craving that activates similar neural circuits to substance addiction

- Tolerance patterns (escalation) consistent with addictive behavior

- Difficulty stopping despite desire to stop and negative consequences

- Withdrawal-like symptoms upon cessation

The most rigorous researchers I've read tend to conclude: the behavioral patterns are real and clinically significant, regardless of how we classify them.

What's your read on this? Does the label matter for recovery?
