Feeding schedule vs work schedule

New to Cats/Just Adopted

Hi guys, I recently took in a cat, he has been with me for around 3 months. I am worried about the smell and insects that draw over to his wet food bowl and since this is my first cat I am under-experienced with most cat things.

I wanted to get him into a schedule as right now it’s just when I wake up and before bed (when I feed him wet food - he has access to kibble) and he rarely finishes his food which means it smells throughout the entire house since its contents are high in meat.

I work rotational shifts from 6am-2pm and 2pm-10pm so I don’t know how I could possibly get him into a schedule especially because he is only 4 months right now and eats when he feels like it.

I looked into automatic feeders (for wet food) and I am open to the idea, but I also have a dog in the house and she loves his food, no matter what I do, if his bowls are on the ground she eats all of it - all the time.

So I am really at a point where I have no clue if I should just be feeding him on my schedule when I wake up and come back home and before bed, or should invest into an automatic feeder and try to place it where the dog can’t reach..

Thank you in advance!
