Google ranking volatility spiked Aug 12-13 - the 6th unconfirmed tremor since June. Dashboard still says nothing.

Another one. Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable flagged a ranking volatility spike on August 12-13, and the Google Search Status Dashboard still read "No incidents" as of August 13, 04:59 PDT. That makes it the sixth unconfirmed tremor since the June 2026 spam update wrapped on June 26.

The detail worth flagging: this wave doesn't look like the Aug 1-3 spike.

The wave count so far

WaveDatesNotes
1Jul 11the "7-Eleven" tremor
2Jul 18-19weekend spike
3Jul 23-24quieter chatter
4Aug 1-3sharpest yet, 10+ trackers
5Aug 5-613 trackers moved at once
6Aug 12-13tools spike, chatter cool

Six spikes in roughly seven weeks. Call it one every eight days, like clockwork nobody asked for.

Why wave 6 reads different

The Aug 1-3 spike came with loud SEO chatter - forums and X threads lit up within hours. The Aug 12-13 spike didn't, at least not at the same volume. Schwartz's own take: "the chatter is somewhat cool, but the tools showed a spike."

Two ways to read that, honestly:

  • Tracking artifact: rank shuffling on long-tail queries that site owners never feel in traffic. Tools see position 11 to 8 flips, humans see nothing.
  • Early rollout: if a named August core update is warming up, instrument-grade movement often shows in trackers before anyone feels it in analytics.

The gap between what Google confirms and what every independent dashboard shows is now the story, not the side note.

Context for the pattern people keep citing: Google's last confirmed ranking change is still the June 2026 spam update. The last core update was May 2026, and the usual gap between core updates runs roughly three months, which points straight at August. There's also the first-of-month pattern - spikes landed near 1-Jun, 1-Jul, 1-Aug - that some analysts treat as a rollout cadence signal.

The Discover disconnect

Separate thing, and it might matter more than the ranking noise. Publisher reports through early August describe unusual Discover behavior - Discover traffic swings that don't line up with search rankings at all. Discover runs on its own signals (freshness, image strength, click behavior), so it can tank while rankings hold, or spike while rankings wobble.

In our data across sites we manage, mixing the two is the #1 misdiagnosis this month: teams see a traffic drop around Aug 3, blame the ranking tremor, and miss that Discover flipped independently two days later.

How I'd separate the two before touching anything

  • GSC > Performance: pull Search results and Discover separately, Aug 1-14 vs Jul 1-14, same page set
  • Impressions held, clicks fell on search: that's an AI Overviews / SERP feature story, not an update story
  • Discover impressions fell off a cliff while search held: leave content alone, check image CTR and headline formats instead
  • Average position moved 3+ spots on money pages: snapshot everything now, then wait 10-14 days - every previous tremor partially settled
  • Don't ship "fixes" mid-tremor. You lose the baseline you'd need to know whether the fix worked

The pattern says wait. Six waves, zero confirmations, and the tremors that looked catastrophic on day one mostly rebalanced within two weeks.

Anyone else watching Discover move opposite to search this month? Curious whether it's hitting evergreen pages or fresh news-style content harder in your GSC - that split tells you which signal actually moved.
