What are the Five Fingers?
I am not asking the obvious question here because the design of PM for the Five Fingers is very clear and detailed:
Thumb - Reference of Italian Mafia and follows "Etiquette" strictly
Index - Follows the prescripts strictly, represents one of the five teachings of Confucianism as "Trust"/"Believe"
Middle - Follows the book of vengeance (reference of the Book of Kanun) and follows the teaching of "Brotherhood"
Ring - Artists and possibly doctors or scientists that study in Art Movement categories (such as Cubism), represent as "Wisdom"/"Intellect".
Pinky - Wielders of relics and follow the path of "Humanity"/"Benevolence". Reference book: Water Margin.
That's the summary of what we know about the Five Fingers but something that doesn't fit right which I have discovered something new.
I have faced a problem, a degree of questions that puzzled me. The Thumb, Middle and Pinky can be easily referenced as the Mafia, Gangsters and then Bandits in the wild (or Chivalric warriors in Wu Xia). When I try to think for a better explanation for Index, I have heard answers as they are a machine cult or something along the lines of Illuminati, which I can accept that. Then there's the Ring.......I have not heard of any artist or scientist that formed a community just to be syndicates, which this last piece of the puzzles me.
I took a step back. The Five Fingers are Syndicates, the strongest five of all of the Syndicates. Still doesn't explains how the Ring should or would be a syndicate since is a facility that teaches people art, art was not wrong, is a way to express.
I took another step back. Syndicate, the term "Syndicate" refers to a group of people that joins together to do business and can be in form of organisations or criminal gangs. Which the Fingers are more in the latter definition as they don't really sale physical products and are enlisted as Syndicates and not like the corps like Wings which it makes the Index, don't fit with the word Syndicate either, they are following orders, orders from papers weaved by those that translate the "Voices of the City" through the machine they used to detect the vibrations of the City.
I took one last step back. All of the known Fingers have the power to rival a Wing. A gang that includes Wing's Backstreet residents as their members, can rival a Wing, a section of the City's state/country (in terms we view a corp as a country or state) which it reminds me of something.
"Are the Five Fingers' concept and design of their system and hierarchy........are actually the ridiculed Rebellions that has occured in real world history?"
Rebellion References:
Etiquette (Thumb):
If we only consider that the Thumb heavily themed upon Families of the Mafia (Such as the Sicilian and Calabria) and their "etiquette" themed rules but if we focus on "Etiquette" themed Rebellion Wars, there are a few that sounds pretty ridicule if we look from the view of humanity and current modern views.
The English "Hat Wars" - The Early Quakers, led by George Fox, completely revolted against this rule. Believing all humans were equal under God, they refused to remove their hats for any human authority. This simple refusal to follow hat etiquette was treated as a dangerous political insurrection. Quakers were dragged to court, heavily fined, and beaten by mobs for keeping their hats on. It became a signature act of civil disobedience that helped define their religious movement. [1]
(I think this one would fit more on the opposite of the Thumb's rules but fit their whole attire as they all have hats)
The Channar Revolt - In 19th century, there was a dress code rebellion in Travancore (modern-day Kerala, India) that was inhumane and strict as Lower status/Lower-caste women shouldn't cover their upper bodies while only upper-caste women were allowed the "privilege" of modesty. Which lead to the Influence by Christian missionaries, lower-caste women rebelled against this degrading caste etiquette by wearing blouses and upper cloths in public. In response, Upper-caste men reacted with violence, attacking the women and tearing their clothes off in public squares. This sparked decades-long violent uprising (from 1813 to 1859). The lower-caste communities fought back fiercely until the King of Travancore finally abolished the law, granting all women the right to cover themselves. [2]
Believe/Trust (Index):
This one is a tough one tbh, I did not understand it as much as Prescripts and watching other videos that has did discovery/intricate investigation about the Index which one video said that the Index have a strong relation with a Weaver of Fate in Greek/Norse Mythology (irc) that their face/appearance was ruined by the Hectate flower made medicine which is the reference blue flower of the Index. This really got me questioning more and made me step back more and more as I am trying to retrace and track what could be the Rebellion that the Index is referenced to, it is also the first Finger that I approach first, believe me because their concept and system is quite alien with the real world reference just after the Ring.
Yet I seem to have found it.
The Prescripts - Weaved by weavers into readable but hard to understand words (at least you can't understand it directly) and it is said as the "language of the City" or the "will of the City". It still doesn't lead to me anything until I read the references in the Wiki page which I know a thing or concept that fits these descriptions.
- "No two Prescripts are the same in any way; as well as their contents being completely different from each other, you can’t expect when and where you’ll receive one."
- "They still cannot outsmart the Prescripts. The Prescripts know all. They can tell whether or not a Prescript has been carried out, how it was done, and if someone is delivering fabricated Prescripts. An individual sending counterfeit Prescripts out of their own volition can ultimately be traced back to the will of the Prescripts, and the City itself."
- "However, if you question who delivers those Prescripts or where they come from and put your curiosity into action, the Proxies will come for you, so beware."
The Prescripts are like rumours of the real world (concept wise), you don't know it is true or not, it comes from somewhere from the world and you shouldn't try to seek the origin of the rumours which it can be a good thing or a bad thing or nothing at all because it was just a rumour, a made-up story, a mystery or a truth waiting to be unfold. The Index however take action upon these rumours as if they are the ones that uphold these actions as they 'believe' it, if one believes these words of no origin can stir up a massive uprising.
To name a few Rebellions due to rumours:
- The Indian Rebellion of 1857 - A new Endfield rifle was introduced and a rumor spread amongst the Sepoys that the paper ammunition cartridges were greased with pig fat and cow fat which to load the rifle, one must bite and tear the paper open. There was no actual evidence that the British intended to defile the soldiers' religions this way, but the rumor spread like wildfire. It triggered a massive, bloody rebellion that lasted over a year and led to the end of the British East India Company.
- The English Peasants' Revolt of 1381: Rumors of a "Great Rumour" - The revolt was fueled by a "great rumour" that spread through the countryside, giving voice to the widespread anger over oppressive taxes and social inequality. These rumors acted as a unifying force, allowing disparate groups of rebels to coordinate and mobilize, transforming local grievances into a national rebellion. The speed at which the revolt spread was largely due to the rapid and effective communication of these rumors through networks of peasants and laborers.
- The Musin Rebellion of 1728: Rumors in Late Joseon Korea - The rebellion was rooted in political factionalism, rumors were crucial in mobilizing support and creating the atmosphere of crisis needed for an uprising. Even after the rebellion was suppressed, its remnants continued to spread rumors to destabilize the government, showing how these falsehoods could sustain a conflict long after it had been militarily defeated.
- Jack the Ripper: I think he would be one of the Index if I have to be real....sending letters to make the Police Department and make it come true..........is not a Rebellion but still...my mind suddenly thought of him and his letters.
If we see it this way, I think I understand why the Index can be a force that can rival a Wing. No joke, rumours can really spread quicker than one can get there and can put down a country. (Would Rien magicked beeper resemble the current social media and the misinformation and falsehood of the news that were reported or not read properly nor understand the culture of the reported local area......I wonder....)
Family/Brotherhood/Love/Human Connections (Middle):
We know the aura, we know the theme of the Middle but their reference was from the Book of Kanun from Albanian and also a related ritual of pricking the Middle finger to strengthen the bond of Brotherhood. When it came to the stated topic of "Rebellion", it was a hard one because there are romance upon some wars but blood feud triggered a rebellion due to a mismanagement of a system and purely out of love/brotherhood or deep friendship to the most dramatic scale......but then I try to digest and dissolve it, what if is because of human relations or basically refering to non-political relationship or just pure relationship?
To name a few of what I found:
- The Rebellion of the Sacred Band of Thebes
- The Sicilian Vespers (Maybe this is why the Thumb and Middle have such deep connections and fueds due to irl history/concept designs?)
- The "Friendly Brotherhood" and Greek Independence: The Philikí Etaireía (Greek for "Friendly Brotherhood")
- The 1751 Pima Revolt
- The War of the Castle of Love (in 13th century in Italy)
Art Movements/Expression of one's thought (Ring):
I think this is more obvious than any other one when it came to this and I was stunned that this actually have history upon true art movement of a certain Austrian Artist. The most I found was about theatrics of expressing the story of the drama and controlling the emotions of audience to a high peak and trigger it into an uprising like what we known that has happened like Rock and Roll or some other Metal bands.
To name a few theatrics:
- The Belgian Revolution of 1830
- The Indian Rebellion of 1857 & the Dramatic Performances Act
And the last but not least: The "Entartete Kunst" which featured Expressionism and Cubism
Yeah.....I do think the Ring is more than what we think of, they are not just artist in a way...
替天行道(Pinky):
The main motto of Water Margin: "Enforcing Justice on Behalf of Heaven" or "Executing the Way of Heaven". Within Water Margin context, is basically Song Jiang's way of saying "To bring justice to the corrupted government" which it was nice to understand it in that context but the more I think about it, there's more to this and not only Song Dynasty's history.
To name a few:
- The Yellow Turban Rebellion
- The Taiping Rebellion
- Joan of Arc and the Siege of Orleans
- The Munster Rebellion
- The Mandate Rebellion
If we have to put Pinky as a unique system syndicate that is different from the other four Fingers, I have found out that there's a similar society/facility that can only consist little members so that it wouldn't cause any uprising because of how powerful they hold their humanity and how strong they control the fate of Humanity: Religions. Buddhism, Daoism, Judaism, Muslim, Shintoism, Christianity. From what I have discovered, most religious facilities can only have a few priest/masters/prophet/sages that teach and educate the fate of their students which some could also have academies just for these practices such as Shaolin, Daoist Temple and I heard of Chatolic schools and Muslim schools as well.
Given the clues we have about the Pinky recently, Confucianism (Kong Qiu, Zi Lu and Zi Gong), Buddhism (Ryoshu and Araya) and Shintoism (Shiomi Yoru) all have religious belief. Most of the Pinky that we know not only straight up have Shin and Mang, they also have EGO too (Kong Qiu: Erli, Ryoshu and Araya, it was believed that Zi Lu and Lei Heng may have it as well but since Lei Heng was more of a religionless Pinky member....maybe that's why PM need him dead? Who knows? Not me definitely). Which fits with some practices in faith and religion that one must explore themselves to reach the potential and worthiness to be by the side of Gods. (In chinese we called it as 心法 (The Arts of the Heart/Inner Training/Cultivation), I don't know if other religions have this type of practice so I apologize of there's anything wrong with this one).
Why I state Shiomi is Shintoism? The Priest/Witch (depends on what language you read about it) of Shinto Temples must maintain themselves as pure and can't be tainted by Kegare (one can say is Miasma or Spiritual pollutants) hence they can maintain their position as the Handlers/Officers/Priest of the Temple yet since Shiomi Yoru had Yoshihide as her child, she is tainted and can't perform her duties within the temple hence got expelled (more accurately speaking that a witch/priest of Shintoism Temple should resign themselves to take care of their child) from the Pinky.
A few friends of mine have guide me along the way and I really do think that these are the design concepts of the Five Fingers.
Another note: as far as we have progressed through the Cantos, I did noticed that from Canto 8, Canto 9 and the future Cantos (10, 11 and 12), all of the related sinners from here on are either semi in-directly or directly have relations to religions.
Dreams of the Red Chamber - Bao Yu's Jade eye is a spiritual daoist jade made by Nuwa and gave him the power to enter into a dream chamber to see and read the fate and future of the girls and women of Daguanyuan
Hellscreen and Spider Thread - Hell themed, one is the artist that drew Hell himself when the other is hanging on to the spider's thread to escape Hell. The other relation is that there was a monk in Japan that drew Hell with his own hands and then the books of Akutagawa have one more that is basically the reference of Gates of Hell (?) known as Rashonmon 罗生门.
The Stranger - Church and abnormal behaviour that was view as not human by the church in the book.
The Odyssey - Direct relation with a pantheon of Greek Gods
Faust - The one who dealt with Satan
That's just what I noticed but you may engage a discussion down in the comments. Almost 1 am here so I shall stop here. Enjoy your read and wish you a fulfilling journey.
