How Did You React to Your Diagnosis
Hi, I'm reaching out here because I'm still afraid to talk about this with anyone I know irl other than my therapist. I've been in and out of therapy since I was an early teenager for a variety of reasons, and have had a very difficult time finding someone who understands me. After what was likely the worst year of my life I finally went to psychoanalysis which (i think?) has been very helpful. After 8 months, he told me last week his "working diagnosis" is a "complex case of borderline".
I'm in my late 20s and am just old/young enough to have had regular access to wikipedia as a kid. I can't remember which age I was when I first discovered the borderline article, but I immediately suspected I fit some of the symptoms. But I never was completely convinced it was me, since it sounded so extreme. Coincidentally, I've been on a mood stabilizer for over a decade (for a neurological condition), so probable extreme symptoms might have been suppressed.
I was shocked, and still in shock, to hear I might have a personality disorder. I'm really worried what my friends and family will think if/when I tell them. I feel like I have a scarlet letter on me now. Typing this out now makes it seem like those are symptoms themselves.
I'd love to hear other's stories about their first thoughts after receiving an official diagnosis. Did it feel validating or were you scared?
