Why were people so bad at video games back in the day?

Every once in a while I'll check out what millennials were talking about when it comes to old games and it always cracks me up a bit. There were people who thought that Alakazam was the best Pokemon in the first generation? They would actually get butthurt if you grabbed them in a fighting game? They thought it was cheating to spam projectiles?

You guys were ass.
