3 questions to ask to avoid a towing scam

If you are stranded after an accident or a breakdown, watch who shows up first. Bandit tow trucks cruise for stranded drivers and hit them with an inflated bill later, sometimes holding the car hostage until you pay. Drivers lose real money to this every year.

Before your car goes anywhere:

  1. Did you or the police actually call this truck? If not, this is a scam.
  2. Get the tow cost and any extra fees, storage included, in writing before the hook goes on your bumper.
  3. A driver who doesn't ask where you'd like your car towed is a red flag 🚩, especially if they're already pushing a specific shop.

Roadside assistance through your own insurer solves most of this before it starts.
