Need advice: Is it acceptable to use Patreon for mod?

SpoilerMods / Modding

Hey everyone, my name is Møri. I’ve been developing mods as a side passion alongside my day job for a few years now.

I started out modding for Skyrim LE, and later transitioned to Minecraft. I’ve successfully released one mod and was deep into the production of my biggest project yet, Candycraft Rebirth. I had been working on it for months until disaster struck: my CPU fried and my PC is completely dead. Right now, I have no rig to work on.

This led me to an idea, but I’m not sure how applicable—or even legal/acceptable—it is within the broader modding community.

My question to you all is: Is it acceptable to set up a crowdfunding project (like a Patreon, Ko-fi, or a personal site) where people who want to support my work can chip in a one-time $5 or $10? In return, backers would get early access to betas and a closer connection/input on the project's development.

To be absolutely clear: Upon full release, all my mods will be 100% free for everyone.

I know that big modding groups like Jurassic Reborn or The Aether II have worked with similar funding models. Considering I also have mod bases ready for Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur's Gate 3, I want to know if doing this as a solo dev is acceptable, or if it would be frowned upon and seen as a massive jerk move?

If it is acceptable, what is the best way and platform to do it transparently and fairly?

Thanks in advance for the advice!
