40 MLS teams needed! Let me explain why (sorry if someone has brought this idea up before)
(This is based on USL USL2 never partnering with MLS)
I believe MLS should grow until they get to 40 teams (currently 30). Why? There are additional markets where teams could thrive (Phoenix, Detroit, Vegas, etc). It helps grow the footprint of soccer into other localized regions.
Obviously build up to 40 teams over time as it makes sense financially/player pool/etc...
But once you are at 40 teams, split the leagues into Tier 1 (League 1) and Tier 2 (League 2) or however you want to name it. [Top 20 average maybe over previous 3 years or just previous season] [21-40 (including the new teams that got MLS to 40) average in tier 2 for previous 3 years or just previous season]
18th, 19th, 20th team get relegate from Tier 1
1st, 2nd, (automatic), 3rd (promotion playoff) get promoted from tier 2
MLS allocation money is slightly higher for Tier 1 teams each season but while maintaining that Tier 2 still makes enough guaranteed to be sustainable for operations.
This creates Promotion / Relegation within MLS but not as a high of a risk from an owners standpoint due to financial backin breakdown from league/tv deal.
I believe there is opportunity and compromise out there to create a higher rewards/risk and meaning for every game played by MLS clubs. I think this would be a great option as soccer only continues to grow here in the US.
thoughts?
