What to do if you feel like you are spiraling and are failing to detach.

venting/ranting

First of all, detaching is not a contest with yourself where you constantly check whether you're “winning” or “losing.”

Did I think about him less today? Why am I still thinking about him? Why do I still care? Why am I not over it yet?

That just becomes another way of obsessing.

Detaching is much more boring than that. It’s discipline. It’s a series of small actions you repeat every day until your brain eventually catches up.

You cannot control whether someone pops into your head. Especially when you cared about them. A random song will remind you of them. A restaurant will remind you of them. You’ll wake up and they’ll be the first thing on your mind. Fine. That’s not the problem.

The problem is what happens next.

“Oh, this reminded me of him.”

Fine.

“Oh, I miss him.”

Also fine.

But then your brain goes:

Is he with that other girl right now? Does he like her more? Why didn't he love me? Was I just a rebound? Did I ever mean anything to him? What if he comes back? What if I never find this kind of connection again?

THAT is where I’m learning to stop myself.

Not by screaming “DON’T THINK ABOUT HIM,” but by going: Okay. There he is again. I miss him. I’m sad. But I don’t need to resolve these uncertainties right now.

I don’t need to know who the new girl is.

I don’t need to know whether he misses me.

I don’t need to decide whether I mattered enough.

I don’t need to analyze our last conversations for the 500th time.

The relationship ended. I already have the information I actually need.

And I think that’s what detaching really is: stopping yourself from feeding the thought once it arrives.

Not checking Instagram. Not looking at followers. Not asking mutual friends for updates. Not talking about him every single time you see your friends. Not creating imaginary conversations where he comes back. Not investigating the new person. Not trying to figure out whether he’s happier than you.

You can miss someone without making them the main character of your day.

And when you catch yourself doing it again, you don't need to punish yourself either. Just redirect.

There I go again. Okay. Back to my life.

Then actually go back to your life. Finish your work. Go to the gym. Call your friend and ask about their life instead of talking about him. Cook something. Go outside. Make plans. Read. Date when you're ready. Build things that have absolutely nothing to do with whether this person ever comes back.

I’m also realizing that no contact has to include informational no contact. If I’m not texting him but I’m still checking his life, asking what he’s doing, wondering who he’s sleeping with and collecting information through other people, emotionally I’m still very much in contact.

And probably the hardest part: stop waiting.

I don't have to convince myself that he will never come back. I just have to live today as though he isn't.

That’s it.

One day at a time.

Wake up and think "Today I will live my life as though he won't come back today" and do that every day.

Detaching isn’t waking up one morning and magically not caring anymore. It’s thinking about them and choosing not to follow the thought down the rabbit hole. Again and again and again.

Until eventually, you realize you don’t have to try so hard anymore.

You don’t stop thinking about them and then detach. You detach, over and over, and eventually you stop thinking about them so much.
