Some life changing JRT advice

Training Tips

Earlier this year, my partner and I were sat in the garden of an airbnb, watching our 9 month old puppy run around like a maniac.

Whilst sat there discussing how we should go about training him, we came across a website (sorry I can't remember it) that talked about the key to training your JRT which really changed our mindset with him.

It said simply that JRT's value their freedom, and if yours can't be trained with treats or toys or other traditional methods, you train them using their biggest reward: Freedom. This immediately resonated for us.

it said if you can get your dog to sit and stay, his greatest reward for him is being freed from that position. and eventually you can train your JRT to sit still for extended periods of time, on the basis that they will be rewarded with their freedom.

We started using this mindset and training his impulse control, and also using games during play such as making him stay and then running with a tug toy, then releasing him to come and run after us and grab the toy. We would play a rough game of tug, and then make him leave it, stay for ages until he was literally buzzing, and then free him to grab the toy. We can place a treat in front of him, make him stay then leave the room and he is still in that position. After we started training him with this in place, we noticed a significant change in him. He was less reactive and able to settle a bit better in public which he was previously unable to do.

Don't get me wrong, he's still an idiot and sometimes all training goes out the window once we leave the house, but I thought it was worth sharing.

Did anyone else receive some life changing advice for their JRT?
