Frustration graduate program

Vent (NO ADVICE)

I’m so lucky to have an amazing advisor and lab because if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be at my program. I’m in an applied social sciences Masters/PhD program, and a part of our requirements is to do a certain amount of internship hours in addition to our teaching requirement. They offer no support in getting internships, so it’s completely on the student to apply and find internships. After applying consistently for two years, I managed to get an internship that’s very aligned with what I want my future career to be (I don’t want to go into academia).I emailed my GPD to ask if it could count towards my internship hours and immediately after I sent that email she called my advisor and told her that she was worried about me balancing my masters thesis, classes, TA/RA, and the internship. I understand the concern, but I’m confident in my ability to balance everything. It won’t be easy but I’m extremely motivated to do this internship because it will be good for me to build my skills and network. She emailed me and asked me how many hours it would be. I told her the amount of hours it would be and that I realized that it would be an undertaking but that I know I could manage it and that I don’t feel great about turning down an opportunity like this considering how competitive things are. In response she basically told me that i shouldn’t do the internship and told me that she wouldn’t endorse it counting towards my hours. She also told me that it isn’t recommended that students do internships while they are still completing their masters thesis. This part specifically is interesting considering both of her students did internships while completing their theses.

I’m so frustrated because I feel like I’ve been working extremely hard to get an opportunity like this only for my GPD to not be supportive of this. I already feel like my lab and I don’t belong in this department because we’re more “applied” than other labs and this makes me feel like I don’t belong even more.

Anyways that’s it, not looking for advice, just needed to vent.
