Iran Announces Negotiations With US To Resume At Completely Arbitrary Time Of 12:01 P.M. On January 20, 2029
The Islamic Republic of Iran has determined that conditions are not presently conducive to meaningful negotiations with the Trump administration.
We are waiting for January 20, 2029.
This date should not be interpreted as having any particular connection to the American political calendar. It reflects Iran’s independent assessment of the time necessary for strategic review, regional consultation, confidence-building, and the natural maturation of diplomatic conditions.
January 19, 2029 was considered too early. January 21 was considered unnecessarily late. January 20, specifically around noon Washington time, emerged as the most appropriate point at which conditions are expected to improve.
Iran is aware that some observers may attach significance to the fact that this date coincides with the scheduled conclusion of the current U.S. presidential term. We regard this interpretation as speculative. Many dates coincide with other events. January 20, for example, also occurs during winter.
Iran also rejects speculation regarding why its negotiating delegation has tentatively reserved hotel rooms in Washington beginning that afternoon, why its briefing materials are labeled “For New Administration,” or why one senior official was overheard asking whether the incoming president prefers coffee or tea.
These are ordinary diplomatic preparations and should not be overinterpreted.
Iran remains fully committed to diplomacy and looks forward to resuming talks at approximately 12:01 p.m. Eastern Time on January 20, 2029, subject, of course, to traffic.
