The Good Liars Jason Selvig & Molly Jong-Fast reflect on nearly a decade of covering Donald Trump, focusing first on a Washington Post report that described Trump allegedly being moved covertly—along with Natalie Harp and Pete Hegseth—via a catering truck while the press corps and others were left on a plane as an apparent decoy, a story the speakers say enraged Trump because it embarrassed him and involved lying about safety and threats. They then connect that pattern of embarrassment to retaliation, discussing reporting that a Qatari plane wasn’t ready and lacked safety features, and claiming Trump responded by using the DOJ to subpoena journalists, which they describe as an unprecedented use of government power to protect his ego. The discussion shifts to Trump’s foreign fixations (including Greenland), then to Minnesota’s Republican gubernatorial primary where Mike Lindell (the “MyPillow guy”) lost and alleged the election was stolen, which they take as evidence that even some Trump-endorsed, extreme candidates can be rejected. Finally, one speaker recounts reporting from a Michigan Trump rally where attendees dismissed ideas like universal health care and higher taxes on billionaires despite personal economic hardship, attributing higher gas prices to Democrats even while acknowledging costs are up, and the segment ends with an anecdote about “MAGA water” being sold with “taste the pure difference,” which the speakers interpret as disturbingly tied to “keep it pure” rhetoric.
