Options for making the sound better?

I have a Roland TD-3 that I’ve had forever, but it’s pretty old- and its preset choices aren’t all that amazing. I’m looking into either getting a different brain (was looking at the TD-17), or getting software to be able to run it through my laptop, except I have no idea where I’d even start with that. Any advice is appreciated :)
