Worst experience
I want to post my worst experience with heightism as a 17yo dude, who at the time was 16 and 5’4ish. So essentially it was halloween and I was out with friends, in a supermarket, getting snacks for the night. This homeless man walks up to us and says ‘stop swearing there’s kids around’. None of us were really swearing or anything, so it was pretty confusing, but ofc we all said yes. Then the homeless dude goes ahead and says ‘like this one here’ while pointing at me, and bursts out laughing. As he walks away he turns around again and does a little air fist bump, and I think some finger guns as well if I remember correctly. Ofc my friends find this hilarious, and have dragged it since. When this initially happened, obviously I wasn’t too happy with it, since I knew my friends would joke abt it all night, but since I’ve been in a far worse mental state lately, I think about it almost everyday. The difference between this and when my friends make fun of my height, or when I got bullied in school for it, or when I see shit online abt it, is that this was outside of all that. Opinions online are always exaggerated and show the extreme. People in school are immature and will hate on anything. This was a grown man, going out of his way to come up to me in public, and ridicule me for something I have no power over, and I’ve realised now that I will never be able to feel normal, because it’s not just a thing in school or online. I wish the worst for that homeless dude, I’m ashamed in myself for just standing there without a response, but that would’ve gotten me made fun of even more, because short guys aren’t allowed to act tough or assertive, or else it’s ‘overcompensating’.
