I came up with this concept for a massive Mesopotamian Water Project connecting Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and potentially other countries in the region. The basic idea is to stop Iraq and Syria being so dependent on declining/upstream controlled flows from the Tigris and Euphrates by creating an additional artificial freshwater supply. Massive renewable powered desalination hubs would be built on the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. The Latakia hub would pump freshwater east to supplement the Euphrates and north/east toward the Tigris/Mosul Dam system. The goal isn’t to replace the natural rivers, but to top up water lost from reduced upstream flows and guarantee a minimum flow for agriculture, ecosystems and dams. The other part is the Grand Mesopotamian Lake, a huge strategic freshwater reservoir constructed gradually in the Iraqi desert. Rather than excavating one enormous hole immediately, it would be built in separate cells over decades, using natural depressions where possible. Basrah, Kuwait and other Gulf desalination hubs could contribute water to it. The lake would have wetlands, reeds, green belts, agriculture and solar around its edges, with deeper central storage areas. Eventually the individual cells could be connected into one reservoir. The surrounding vegetation and wetlands would also create a much greener local environment than exists there today. The water wouldn’t necessarily be treated to drinking water standards before being put into rivers/lakes because that would waste enormous amounts of energy and money. It would primarily be freshwater for river replenishment, agriculture, ecosystems and industry. Individual countries/cities could withdraw it and treat it further to drinking water standards.there would also be a navigable canal system connecting the Persian Gulf to the new Grand Mesopotamian Lake to the Mediterranean near Tyre, creating a second water trade connection across the region without replacing the natural Euphrates Tigris outlet. I also thought about the enormous amount of brine this level of desalination would create. Instead of immediately dumping it back into the sea, the desalination hubs could include mineral recovery facilities targeting magnesium, salts, bromine and potentially lithium. Whatever concentrated brine remains would then undergo controlled offshore discharge through monitored diffuser systems designed to minimise local salinity impacts. The bigger idea is that water becomes something the region can increasingly produce, store and share, rather than simply fighting over a shrinking natural supply. It obviously would be an absurdly expensive multi-decade megaproject and there are huge engineering/environmental questions to solve. But that’s why I made the other two diagrams showing how the lake could be constructed in stages and how the desalination brine could be managed. Curious what people from Iraq/Syria/Kuwait/Saudi and people who actually work in water engineering think of the concept. I’m Assyrian and if there’s one thing I know about our homeland and about Iraq and Syria, is if you take the water you destroy the country. Something needs to be done and I thought this could be an idea.
