How to get parents involved
So I work for a group practice but work only in local preschools and daycares. I absolutely love it. However, I have been struggling so much to get parents involved.
I see kids at their school/daycare so I don’t naturally see parents as I would if they came to an office. I also work in several of them so being around at drop off or pick up is difficult and some kids ride the bus.
It honestly baffles me how many parents are just MIA. I know parenting is hard and I’m working with some families in tough situations. But… like I’m seeing your 4 year old for therapy. I need to be able to speak to you.
I have considered making it a policy that if I don’t hear from the parent like once every month I discharge. But first I feel like that punishes the kid and second I honestly don’t know that I’d be able to fill my caseload.
Here’s what I’ve done to try to mitigate it so far:
-I invested in a texting service where I can send mass texts with BCC so they don’t see recipients
-I have it available for them to self-schedule their parent meetings with me and try to offer a variety of times- morning, afternoon, evening, and one Saturday a month
-I talk to every parent about it before starting with their child and include it in my welcome letter
-I ask teachers or staff to help communicate for/with me
-I offer for these meetings to be phone, video, or in person.
I don’t know what else to do. I can’t chase down 25 individual sets of parents each month. Do I just let it go? Any other ideas or advice?
