Enmeshed daughter in denial
I had a good friend who has now passed away from a chronic illness. This friend, whom we will call Mary, was chronically ill her entire life. She had a daughter who basically became her personal caregiver. Mary was a good person but was odd when it came to the relationship she had with her daughter. She named her after herself; she would dress her similarly to herself even into adulthood. They were never apart not even when her daughter attended college. Mary would sit in the car waiting for her. As I mentioned, she and her daughter would dress the same, wear their hair the same, and even wear the same glasses. Long story short, she passed away when her daughter was in her late 20s. The daughter is having a very difficult time dealing with the grief. The entire time she was ill, she was in denial about the fact that the end was coming. She would become upset when doctors informed her there was nothing else to do. She hated anyone who would ever try to address this with her. We were friends for a long time, but I was never able to be honest with her because I knew she did not want to hear it. Her daughter has a lot of anger issues and does not get along with many people. I am one of the few. I feel bad for her because she desperately needs therapy but refuses. What can I do to help her?
