CERT Polska’s August 2026 follow-up materially extends the event reconstruction. Investigators established that a second CHP plant had been attacked through an unusual lateral-movement path originating at a compromised wind farm. The attacker reached a Teltonika cellular router connected to a DSO-managed private APN, used that APN to discover a WAGO PFC200 controller associated with the CHP plant, and then pivoted through the controller into the plant’s OT network. From there, the attacker conducted industrial reconnaissance and ultimately placed Siemens PLCs into STOP mode, interrupting the steam turbine and process-water treatment systems and temporarily halting cogeneration. The plant recovered quickly enough to avoid customer-facing disruption, but the incident demonstrated that a private telecommunications network intended to interconnect field assets can become an attack path between operational environments when endpoint isolation, administrative-interface controls, credential hygiene, and trust boundaries are inadequate.

This follow-up sharpens the article’s central thesis. The decisive security boundary in modern energy infrastructure is not simply the perimeter of an individual plant, nor even the interface between a plant and a grid operator. It is the wider graph of remote access, administrative authority, telecommunications, vendor connectivity, shared infrastructure, field devices, and recovery dependencies that connects distributed assets into an operational system. What is electrically decentralized may remain cybernetically coupled. Shared VPN technologies, private APNs, management practices, credentials, device families, and maintenance architectures can transform repeated local weaknesses into scalable attack paths.

The article therefore interprets the Polish campaign primarily as an architectural failure mode rather than as a story about unusually sophisticated malware. Its implications extend to renewable plants, BESS, CHP, hybrid systems, grid-interface devices, remote O&M, vendor-support channels, and other digitally mediated energy assets. Using enterprise architecture and IEC 62443 as design lenses, it argues for explicit zoning and conduits, strong remote-access controls, individual identities and MFA, elimination of default credentials, isolation of management interfaces, authenticated firmware and configuration changes, centralized logging, protected backups, tested restoration procedures, and treatment of private communications networks as untrusted unless their security properties are explicitly verified and enforced.

The broader conclusion is that the cyber resilience of future energy systems will depend not only on how much distributed capacity is deployed, but on how that capacity is digitally organized. If connectivity, remote operations, and fleet standardization scale faster than architectural governance, the attack surface scales with them. If trust boundaries, communications paths, device administration, evidence collection, and recovery are designed as critical-infrastructure properties from the outset, the same operational efficiencies that make distributed energy manageable need not become the mechanisms that make coordinated sabotage scalable.
