Dot com drivers, should there be a cap on deliveries when the temp is over 35°?
I had;
15 drops this morning 690kg
16 drops this afternoon. 715kg
Ok, got through It with plenty of water and cold soaked towels, it was a struggle but I made it through. My van temp gauge was showing 42° at 4pm, I know it's through the engine bay so not an entirely true temperature but damn I was sweltering.
But;
My colleague had 17 drops, 51am, 24ch, 14fz this afternoon, 810kg total. His van was the only one without a bay so he had no cover & he had to load this in direct sunlight then go out and deliver it. He also had multiple drops upstairs in flats. One of his drops was an 86kg 6am, 2ch that was a same day sale, surely that should not have gone through in these temps.
We've known this heatwave was coming for weeks, just like the previous heatwaves yet we're still getting Full vans. Do you think that deliveries should be capped in this weather.
I'm 55yo but the other 5 drivers on my shift are all younger than me but everyone was absolutely destroyed when we got back in this evening.
I think at least a 10min break every hour should be mandated when we hit over 30°.
It's in the news that nhs staff are fainting with the high temps yet we're doing a far more physical job.
The UK Gov Amber health warning states "the wider population is likely to experience adverse health effects including heat exhaustion, sunburn, dehydratio, nausea, fatigue."
" some changes in working practices and daily routines are required" yet we're getting the same rounds that we normally get in more inclement weather
To be fair, our management do provide water & ice lollies but I'm diabetic so can't take the ice lollies.
What is your store doing to mitigate the health risks that comes from working in this heat?
Thoughts?
