Manipulative and dramatic direct reports
I’m about 20 years into my career and have been in my current role for several years, it’s my first time managing people, but I’ve been working various roles here for 10 years. I’ve always considered myself a hard worker and I think that I get along with others well, and I haven’t received feedback otherwise once in my career. In my current role, I went from peer to supervisor, and gradually as various promotions, etc. happened (or in some cases, didn’t happen) for certain members of my team, it seems clear to me that two of them are constantly undermining me, stirring up drama, and I do know in fact some of the things they have said to my supervisor about me, some of which are outright lies. I mean well, I want to do a good job, and I believe I am kind, clear, and considerate. I have received the feedback that I’m too “yielding”, and I agree with that and am trying to work on it. I have a hard time when people don’t like me and I know that’s something I need to work on, and I know that it’s simply impossible to satisfy everyone. But sometimes I start to feel almost paranoid, especially about one of them. I have seen multiple instances where they were obviously being manipulative, communicating different things to different people and making simple things that u was handling incredibly confusing and difficult for no reason. I don’t know what they’re up to or why, and that honestly scares me. I guess my question is, am I just not cut out for this? I truly love my org and I don’t want to be run off by a couple of petty people… but I’ve been SO MISERABLE for SO LONG, and it’s to the point that I just don’t feel it’s worth the impact on my mental health. I walk around here on the verge of tears every day. I feel like I’ve tried everything I can to resolve this. Yes my manager knows about this and so does one other superior who I really feel is an ally, and they seem to see the behaviors the same way I do, but amongst some others this person does a pretty good job coming off as totally great hard worker and benevolent. Should I just move on from a place I thought I’d work through to retirement?
