What did you start later in life that you wish you started sooner?
Starting at 28, I sometimes wondered whether I had entered martial arts too late to become genuinely good at it.
I kept showing up. I trained several days a week, competed in local tournaments, earned my black belt at 32, and became an assistant instructor at my school.
The part I never anticipated was sharing all of this with my five-year-old daughter. She now trains four to six days a week, and we compete at the same tournaments. Watching her develop confidence and discipline has made every class, bruise, nervous tournament and exhausting evening worthwhile.
Starting as an adult does have limitations. Recovery takes longer, work and family compete for your time, and you may never catch someone who has trained since childhood. But starting late and starting too late are not the same thing.
I originally worried about what I had missed. Now I’m grateful that my daughter and I get to experience this together.
