How to make friends on a gap year?

Probably will do a gap year, but I'm worried about loneliness.

I'll obviously travel to my friends unis, but thats not always feasible as I'll be working and resitting, plus ucas and interviews.

How do I start making local friends? I'm not in a very big town icl...
