Looking for horror stories--Not doing Disney mom guilt
This is so so so stupid and first worldy but I've been feeling horribly about this because it feels like everyone and their dog have been taking Disney vacations and I just don't think it's going to happen for my 9 year old. The final straw was hearing that my child free brother and his wife are going to Disney world this fall. The same people who have glared at my kids for the unforgivable crime of being kids. I'm sure they'll be fun there 🙄
We took our oldest a couple of years before I got pregnant with our youngest, when she was about four. It was fun and magical and all that but she refused to ride most rides. Still she liked seeing the characters and going to shows and stuff. But she doesn't remember any of it.
We wanted to wait until youngest was older than that. But the year before I finally planned to go back to Disney our state adopted much stricter truancy laws where youngest could lose his placement at the good school district he's open enrolled into and I didn't want to risk that. My daughter's school went from being chill about all her medical related absences (she has a lot of medical issues) to breathing down my neck ever since this stupid law was adopted (it's not because of money, funding isn't attached to attendance in our state. It's just that they have to comply with this stupid law). Going to Florida in summer is out of the question. My daughter is extremely prone to heat stroke/ hear exhaustion. And it doesn't sound fun at all going when the heat and crowds are at the worst.
But above all I just don't think my son will like it and I don't think my daughter even wants to go back. Son has ADHD and is on a wait-list to be evaluated for autism. He's extremely inflexible/rigid and it's hard to get him to do fun things unless he's 100% on board. He hates Mickey mouse and will probably complain every time he sees Mickey and any other character he doesn't love. Other than Princess and the Frog most of the Disney movies he loves are Pixar and since it's been forever since we've gone I'm not sure how much Pixar stuff they have. He will refuse to wait in line and refuse shows. I know they have some kind of fast pass for people with disabilities but ive heard theyve become super strict with it and he probably wouldn't qualify these days.
It just doesn't seem like the best use of money and vacation time for our family but sometimes he sees it advertised and wants to go. I just hate how intense and expensive the experience seems to have gotten since we went like 12 years ago. We've gone on lots of cool trips and yet I'm made to feel like Disney is the ultimate bucket list experience for kids and I'm somehow failing by not taking them.
