is it cruel to give false assurance to people when they really need it?

i feel like i cross the boundary between hope and false hope a lot when i want to do something for someone but like there's just nothing i can do🥀 you can't really state the obvious to them because that'd be REALLY fucking mean but trying to make them happy just for the moment is also cruel😔
