I have to drain the fuel out of my 97 ranger. I'm going to disconnect a fuel line from the fuel filter & then jump the fuel pump relay. Anything I should know before doing this?

I got some 16 gauge wire. This will be fine to make a little jumper out of, right? I just don't want any risk of damaging anything so figured I'd ask here before actually doing it. I only have a little less than a quarter tank to drain.
