THE TAINTED SAND

PART 1: THE CONFESSION

EXT. SANDRA'S HOUSE - NIGHT

INT. SANDRA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Posters of band logos and sports heroes adorn the walls.

SANDRA (17), energetic, outgoing, and a bit of a tomboy, paces nervously across the floor.

LENA (17), quiet, artistic, and reserved, sits on Sandra's bed, staring blankly at an open sketchpad.

SANDRA

Lena, please, just tell me what's wrong. You've been like this all week.

LENA

(voice trembling)

I… I don't know if I can.

SANDRA

We tell each other everything. Come on, Lena. You know you can trust me.

Lena looks up, her eyes glistening with tears.

LENA

It's… it's about…

(hesitates, taking a deep breath)

It's about you.

Sandra stops pacing. Her heart pounds against her chest.

SANDRA

Me? What about me?

LENA

(tears falling)

I… I think I'm in love with you, Sandra.

Sandra stares at her, completely speechless.

Lena covers her face with her hands, SOBBING softly.

SANDRA

Lena…

LENA

(voice muffled)

I know it's stupid. I know you probably don't feel the same way. We're best friends. I've probably ruined everything.

Sandra sits down beside Lena on the bed and gently pulls Lena's hands away from her face.

SANDRA

Hey… hey, it's okay. It's okay to feel this way.

LENA

(looking up, tears streaming)

But… what if you don't… what if you only see me as a friend?

Sandra takes Lena's hand. Her own hand trembles slightly.

SANDRA

Lena… I…

(struggling for words)

I've never… I've never thought about it like this before. But… you're my best friend, Lena. You're… you're everything to me.

Lena sniffles, looking at Sandra with a mixture of hope and fear.

LENA

So… what does that mean?

Sandra squeezes Lena's hand. A small smile forms on her lips.

SANDRA

I don't know yet. But… I want to find out. Together.

Lena smiles back through her tears. A flicker of happiness shines through as she leans her head on Sandra's shoulder.

LENA

Okay.

Sandra puts her arm around Lena, pulling her closer. They sit in comfortable silence, the weight of their unspoken feelings hanging in the air—filled with possibility.

FADE TO BLACK.

PART 2: THE UNWANTED FLAVOR

EXT. SANDRA'S HOUSE - NIGHT

INT. SANDRA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

SIXTEEN MONTHS LATER.

The same bedroom, but the posters on the walls seem faded now.

Lena sits on the bed, talking animatedly about her artwork. Sandra listens with a forced smile playing on her lips.

LENA

…and then I added this layer of iridescent paint. It’s subtle, but it gives the whole piece this ethereal glow. You’ll have to come see it when it’s finished.

SANDRA

(nodding)

I can’t wait. You’re so talented, Lena.

Lena beams.

A brief, uncomfortable silence settles between them. Sandra seems distracted, her gaze drifting to a point somewhere past Lena.

LENA

Is everything okay? You’ve been… quiet tonight.

SANDRA

(forces a laugh)

Just tired, I guess. Long day at work.

Lena reaches out for Sandra’s hand, but Sandra pulls away slightly.

LENA

Sandra… you know you can tell me anything.

Sandra gets up and walks to the window, keeping her back turned to Lena.

SANDRA

I know.

Lena frowns with worry. She gets up, walks over, and places a hand on Sandra's shoulder.

Sandra FLINCHES.

LENA

Sandra, what is it?

Sandra turns to face Lena. Her eyes are filled with pain. Beneath the surface, something dark and desperate churns.

Sandra pulls away again. Her hand disappears beneath a thick blanket draped over her lap.

SANDRA

I… I can’t do this anymore.

LENA

What? What do you mean?

Sandra doesn’t answer. She stares at Lena with a mix of love and despair. Lena reaches for her again, but Sandra recoils.

SANDRA

Don’t.

Lena stops. She sees the coldness in Sandra’s eyes and knows something is terribly wrong.

LENA

Sandra… what’s under the blanket?

Sandra closes her eyes to steel herself. She takes a deep breath and pulls her hand out from under the blanket.

She is holding a LARGE SHOTGUN.

Lena GASPS, stepping back in horror, her hand flying to her mouth.

LENA

(shaking with fear)

No…

Sandra looks at Lena, tears welling up in her eyes. She opens her mouth to speak, but no words come out. She shakes her head as a single tear rolls down her cheek.

LENA

(trembling)

Sandra, please… put it down. We can talk about this. Whatever it is, we can fix it. Together.

Sandra doesn't respond.

SHE PLACES THE BARREL OF THE SHOTGUN INTO HER MOUTH.

LENA

!! Put down the ! Fucking shotgun!.. NO!...

Sandra closes her eyes.

A THUNDERING GUNSHOT RINGS OUT—a violent shockwave rattling the room.

Lena lunges forward, but it’s too late. The blast leaves a devastating wound, spraying blood across the room. Sandra collapses to the floor, lifeless.

Lena falls to her knees beside Sandra, her screams turning into heart-wrenching sobs. She cradles Sandra’s head in her arms, her hands and white dress covered in blood.

LENA

(sobbing uncontrollably)

No… no… please…

The love of her life is gone.

POINT OF VIEW SHOT - LENA'S PERSPECTIVE

Panicked and losing control, Lena trashes the room in absolute rage and grief. She paces back and forth, hyperventilating, struggling to breathe.

FADE TO BLACK.

PART 3: THE TAINTED SAND (THE CONCLUSION)

EXT. ROCKY OUTCROP - DAY

Massive ocean waves CRASH violently against the rocks below, sending spray high into the air.

Lena sits huddled on the edge, wrapped in a blanket, staring out at the turbulent sea. She has been sitting here for hours, unmoving.

She clutches a crumpled piece of paper—Sandra’s note. The harsh wind whips at it, but Lena holds tight.

FLASHBACK - INT. LENA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Lena reads Sandra's handwritten letter, her voice trembling over the memory.

SANDRA (V.O.)

Lena, my love… if you’re reading this, then… then I’m gone. I’m so sorry. I know I promised we’d face everything together, but… the darkness inside me… it was too much. It consumed me. I couldn’t let it hurt you anymore. You deserve happiness, Lena. A life filled with light and laughter. And I… I knew I could never give you that. I was broken, Lena. Shattered. And I didn’t want to drag you down with me.

EXT. ROCKY OUTCROP - DAY (PRESENT)

The wind continues to howl. Lena squeezes her eyes shut as the voiceover continues in her head.

SANDRA (V.O.)

I know this will hurt you. More than anything. And for that, I’m truly sorry. But please, Lena… please try to remember the good times. Remember the laughter, the whispers in the dark, the way we held each other close. Remember the love we shared. It was real, Lena. It was the most real thing in my life. I’ll love you forever. Even in the darkness, even in death… I’ll always love you.

BACK TO SCENE.

Lena sobs silently, clutching the paper to her chest. She rereads it over and over, every word an agonizing wound.

Overwhelmed by the guilt of missing the signs, she stands up, her movements sluggish. She walks slowly toward the precipice.

She reaches into her backpack pocket and pulls out a LARGE KITCHEN KNIFE. The steel blade gleams in the fading light.

Lena falls to her knees on the cold stone, tears streaming down her face.

SANDRA (V.O.)

…please try to remember the good times… the love we shared…

The memories bring no comfort—only sharp, unbearable pain.

Lena raises the knife with a trembling hand. The roar of the crashing waves drowns out her sobs.

She PLUNGES the knife deep into her chest.

Lena GASPS in shock and agony as blood pours out over her clothes. Crying violently from the physical and emotional pain, she stares out at the ocean one last time.

Her eyes slowly close. She falls forward onto the rocks.

The crumpled letter slips from her lifeless fingers, fluttering away into the wind and over the cliff.

The CAMERA focuses on the ocean waves crashing relentlessly against the shore. The sun sets, painting the sky in cold shades of gray.

The ocean carries on its unending rhythm—washing over the rocks, trapping the moment of Lena's final act of despair in an eternal loop.

FADE TO BLACK.
