Butterfly Cut Question

Hi everyone! I usually do a butterfly cut at home and it turns out pretty great, recently however, I just did a big chop straight across and it left my hair looking pretty flat and round (i have 2c/3a curly hair).... Now my question is what would happen if i only cut the back high pony and didnt do the "unicorn" one? Would it look too uneven? Thing is im happy with how most of the front looks but would like some layers...Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :)
