Is it normal to not know where the sun rises at 17?

This evening my friend and I decided to watch the shooting stars. He asked where to look, and I said where the sun rises, and he asked: "And where does the sun rise?" It turned out he didn't know where the east was. At 17. I was shocked, is this normal?
