THE WORLD'S MOST AWKWARD CONVERSATION
“I know we agreed to be casual,” he says.
“That’s right,” I say, waiting.
“Well, I wanted to be casual, too, I really did,
but the way the morning light hits your cheekbones,
and the way you whisper my name across the sheets,
it pushed me way past casual,” he says.
Me, squirming under his gaze, “Did it now?”
“It did,” he says. “I just couldn’t help myself.
Soon I found myself drowning whenever you
weren’t around because you were my only reason
to come up for air. But every time I did, you were
sunbathing on the shore, oblivious to my calls for help.”
“I didn’t realize you thought about it that way,” I say, guilty.
“That’s all I think about-you. Even though you told me
you wanted no strings attached, I am tangled in the threads
of you.”
Me, reeling from his confessions, “I don’t understand. I thought I was clear?”
He takes a deep breath. “And you were.
You were as clear as a mountain stream, but I-
a man who thinks he knows better- opened my heart
just a bit too much. And I….
I fell in love with you. I am in love with you.”
Me, staring blankly.
“You don’t have to say anything! I know I just dropped
a bomb on you, blew up your reality and didn’t take
any of your feelings into account, but I needed to tell you.
I had to get it off my chest. I love you.”
“Okay,” I say. My brain has stopped working.
“Can I just kiss you one last time? That is all I will ask
of you. One more time. A goodbye.”
Me, stupidly, “Okay”.
