21:9 -- either seeing pixels or fall in love with fans
At work, I have Lenovo ThinkVision P32UD-40 32": 16:9, 3840x2160 -- everything is smooth and nice. I decided to buy a similar one for my home office, and chose Lenovo ThinkVision P34WD-40 34": 21:9, 3440x1440 as I like this screen ratio.
When I connected it to my computer, I instantly felt that something was off with the letters. First thing first, I checked the settings on my laptop and monitor. The situation didn't improve.
After talking with AI, realized that ppi for my work monitor is 140, and for my home monitor is 110. Thus, the distance, at which an average eye stop noticing pixels is 65cm and 80cm respectively (25 and 30 inches). I am used to sitting ~75cm/29in to the monitor; if I force myself to sit further, I feel discomfort (I have myopia).
I thought about changing my home monitor to 5120x2160 increasing ppi to 160, but my laptop is already working with fans sometimes. Interestingly, with my work monitor it is totally quiet.
Looking for feedback from the community:
- have you experienced similar stuff? Could it be a problem with software (I use ChromeOS) specifically for the 21:9 screen ratio?
- will this bad feeling from letters go away in case I get used to the new monitor? Maybe I just need to get used to the new distance.
- if I decide to change my home monitor, what is your opinion between going for 5k2k (screen ration I like) vs my office model (that I know I like).
