Took me way too long to figure this out, so posting in case it helps someone else.
For years I thought I just lacked discipline around food. Every tracking app confirmed it: the red flashing text when I went over some arbitrary number, the streak that made me feel like a failure for taking a day off, and the cold charts treating my body like a math equation. I kept blaming myself for not sticking with it.
The reframe that actually landed: the tool was designed against me. Features built for the general population land like traps when your brain is looking for any number to obsess over. That red warning doesn't teach you anything about your body, it just punishes you for eating. When a tool treats your body as an equation, the math becomes the entire relationship.
What helped was switching from counting to just writing; sitting down and typing what I ate in plain words, plus how it felt, no score, no daily limit judging me. Weirdly, that small shift let me start noticing food-mood patterns without the surveillance-and-guilt loop kicking in. I stopped bracing for a verdict every time I logged.
Curious for the folks here who dropped calorie apps, what did you replace them with? or did you just stop tracking entirely?
