So I did an Aspid Hive concept in Kingdom's edge a bit ago and decided to recreate it in Pharloom. Basically, turns out Aspids are just sent out in groups to explore and settle new lands. They normally dig out their own caverns if existing caverns prove to be occupied by stronger foes, or simply unsuited for their presence. Their origin has yet to be traced back to a single definitive spot, however rumors circulate of a realm rivaling the prowess of Pharloom and Hallownest deep within the Desolate Wastes.
These little critters initially showed up in the heyday of the Order of Karak and used explored caverns to set up shop after going under Pharloom's entrance. Thereafter, they were able to expand continually, eventually coming into contact with the Order. A few skirmishes later and the connections between the former Coral Gorge(current Blasted Steps) and the hive were severed after a particularly bloody exchange. After the initial arrival of Grandmother Silk didn't do much to peak the interests of the hive. However when news reached them of the conflict between Grandmother Silk and the Order of Karak, they sprung out and quickly took the Wormways from the Order before the forces of Grandmother Silk could reach the area. Afterwards, a massive battle would take place at the Wormways as the Citadel's forces moved against the Aspid Hive. Realizing the cost of keeping the region, they simply withdrew from the Wormways and sealed the last of entrances between themselves and the outside world.
Ever since the battle against the citadel, the Aspid Hive has continued their operations, scavenging within the caverns and occasionally striking at surrounding regions. By the events of Silksong, the Hive has resisted the Haunting extremely well. They maintain their independence as they transition from a Hive mind to a proper civilization. This shift has unknown reasons to foreigners, however Shakra comments on a recent fight with a haunted Aspid, and how it seemed lost from the queen while she's in the Sands of Karak.
Once Act 3 begins and the void expands, Aspids can be seen in the large drop to Bone Bottom destroying the Void-laced silk. When the Plasmium infection begins the Wormways, portions of the Aspid Hive in the connection are affected by it, however once Hornet comes through and kills the Plasmified Aspids, they respawn as the regular variants and do not attack Hornet first. The area is accessible after breaking the ceiling on the upper floor of the Wormways and utilizing the Silk Soar ability to fly up into the area. The map is connected to the Wormways map as well. After fighting her way through the entire area and reaching the upper left room, she may break a wall at the Aspid head to find the queen. Although sleeping initially, she wakes up after defeating all the enemies in the room. Upon defeat, the Aspid Queen retreats and nods her head in approval. Thereafter, no members of the hive will attack Hornet and will even leave gifts in her bellhome from time to time.
