The financial aid system explained plainly: FAFSA vs CSS Profile vs scholarships, and what's actually NEW for 2026-27. All from official sources.

💰 Financial Aid

Financial aid can feel confusing because there are really three different systems to keep track of: FAFSA, CSS Profile, and outside scholarships. They all work differently, so here's the simple breakdown.

FAFSA: Federal and state aid

The FAFSA is free and is your main application for federal aid, including Pell Grants, federal loans, and work-study. It can also be used for some state aid and scholarships.

For 2026-27, the FAFSA uses 2024 tax information and gives you an SAI, or Student Aid Index, instead of the old EFC. You can also list up to 20 colleges online.

The maximum Pell Grant for 2026-27 is $7,395, and you don't need to guess whether you'll qualify. Just file the FAFSA and let the formula determine your eligibility. One new rule for 2026-27: if your SAI comes out at $14,790 or higher, you won't qualify for Pell at all, so higher-income families shouldn't count on it.

CSS Profile: College-specific financial aid

The CSS Profile is separate from FAFSA and is used by colleges to determine their own institutional aid. Not every college requires it, so check each school's requirements.

It costs $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional school, although some students qualify for a fee waiver. Domestic undergraduate students with family income up to $100,000 can submit it for free.

The CSS Profile can also ask for more financial information than FAFSA, so don't assume that completing FAFSA means you're done.

Outside scholarships

These are scholarships from companies, foundations, community organizations, and other groups. They're separate from FAFSA and CSS Profile.

I'd focus less on huge, famous scholarships and more on local, school-specific, employer-related, and interest-based scholarships, since these can be easier to find and may have smaller applicant pools.

One important thing: an outside scholarship doesn't always reduce what you pay dollar-for-dollar. Depending on the college's policy, it could reduce loans or other aid, so check the school's rules.

The easiest way to think about it:

CostFree$25 + $16/school, unless waivedUsually free

The biggest thing is don't judge a college by its sticker price alone. Look at the net price after all your financial aid is applied. File the FAFSA, complete the CSS Profile when a college requires it, and then look for outside scholarships on top of that.
