The three-sentence test that showed me I wasn't actually learning anything
Something I started doing last year that changed how I study, in case it helps someone.
After finishing a chapter, close the book and write three sentences about what it said. From memory. No looking.
That's it. That's the whole thing.
The reason it works is uncomfortable. Most of us study by reading, highlighting, maybe rewriting notes. All of those are recognition tasks. Your brain sees the material and goes "yes, I know this." Recognition is the easiest thing memory does, and it feels identical to actually knowing something. That's why you can read a chapter twice, feel confident, and blank in the exam.
Producing three sentences from nothing is a recall task. It's harder, it feels worse, and it's the only one that predicts whether you'll have the material later.
A few things I learned doing this:
The first attempt is always bad. Six pages in, I could usually manage two vague sentences. That felt like failure. It isn't. The gap between what you think you understood and what you can produce is the exact thing you need to see. Reading it again without seeing that gap just wastes the hour.
Write it badly on purpose. If you find yourself reaching for the book to get the wording right, you've turned it back into copying. Wrong words, right idea, is the goal.
Say it out loud if writing feels slow. Same effect. Explaining to an imaginary person works better than you'd think, mostly because you can't skip over the parts you don't understand when you have to say them.
Do it before you move on, not at the end of the session. At the end you'll only remember the last chapter anyway.
Then revisit. This part matters as much as the rest. Come back to that section a day later, then a few days after that, then a week or two. Not rereading the whole thing, just testing whether you can still produce those three sentences. Spacing is what turns one good study session into something you still have in three months.
I read less material now and know most of it. Before, I got through a lot and kept almost nothing. The volume was never the point.
