I got sick of Spotify, so I made my own radio station
I grew up with 80s and 90s radio, and eventually realised I missed something Spotify can't really replicate.
Not the music itself. The experience of listening to a radio station. I was over Spotifys crappy algorithms.
I missed the jingles between songs. The DJ trivia. Random TV themes. Movie quotes. Hearing a song you haven't thought about in 25 years. The feeling that you're listening to an actual station rather than just pressing play on a playlist.
So I decided to build one.
I created Keep Laughing Forever Radio, an internet radio station dedicated entirely to the 80s and 90s. Mainly because that is when I grew up.
It's not just a playlist running on repeat. I built the station around that old-school radio experience, including:
- 80s and 90s music
- Retro radio jingles
- TV theme tunes
- Movie quotes
- DJ-style transitions
- The occasional completely random bit of nostalgia you'd forgotten existed
I also built an app so people can actually listen to it like a proper radio station rather than having to sit at a computer with a browser tab open.
The funny thing is, I originally just wanted something I would enjoy listening to. Then I figured that if I was missing this kind of radio, maybe other people were too.
So instead of complaining that Spotify wasn't giving me what I wanted, I made a station myself and it has blown up! I now do it full time.
If anyone wants to hear what I ended up making:
