AITA for Calling the Police When My Sister Told Me Not To?
My sister, Emma,[29], and she has been passing through a messy divorce. Her ex-husband has always been manipulative , but she said he had never physically hurt her.
Around 2 a.m. one night, Emma was at my apartment with her 7-year-old daughter. She was crying, barefoot, and had a bruise around her wrist one could tell she had been beaten.
I asked her what happened.
She told me her ex broke into her apartment and demanded custody of their daughter. She narrowly escape through the back door and ran to my place.
I reached for my phone immediately.
Emma held my arm and said, “Please don’t call the police. You gave me your words you wouldn’t.”
I reminded her that I never promised to look away from something like this, but she begged me not to get myself involved. She said she was scared that if he got arrested, he’d become even more aggressive afterward.
I called anyway.
The police came, took pictures of her wounds, and found serious damage to her apartment door. Her ex was arrested.
Emma was angry with me.
She said I had taken control away from her and took a decision about her life without her permission. I told her I couldn’t watch and do nothing while she and her daughter were clearly in danger.
The next day, I got a call from a detective.
He said they had gone through the security footage from her apartment building and discovered something disturbing: Emma’s ex has been spying on her for over 2 weeks.
The police later found texts on his phone proving that he had been planning to intimidate Emma into giving up custody of their daughter. He had even planned having someone “scare her enough to get out of town.”
Emma gave up and agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
But she still says I betrayed her.
She says she was afraid and needed me to respect her wishes, not make things worse by contacting the police.
My mother took sides with her and says I should have respected because it was her situation.
My dad says I did the only fair thing because there was a child involved and Emma had already been injured.
I understand why Emma is angry, but I honestly don’t know how I could have sit and watch her show up at my door injured with her daughter and simply send her home.
AITA for calling the police even though my sister specifically told me not to?
