Three Months with Fedora as an Accountant: My Experience So Far

Discussion

I’m a public accountant, and I’ve been using Fedora for about three months. I installed it in a dual-boot setup with Windows because I wasn’t sure Linux would be enough for my daily work.

My main concern was software. Some applications from regulatory agencies only work on Windows or macOS, and several tools provided by the tax administration rely on Excel files with macros that I haven’t been able to use properly in LibreOffice. I also depend on tools like Power Query and Power Pivot, for which I still haven’t found a complete replacement on Linux.

Aside from these limitations, my experience with Fedora has been very good. It runs incredibly smoothly on my ThinkPad, and I especially like Fedora Workstation with GNOME because of its simplicity, ease of use, and customization options.

One of the things that has surprised me the most is how I’ve been able to adapt my workflow. I now use Python for several tasks I previously handled with Excel, especially for processing data and automating repetitive tasks. It doesn’t replace everything I did with Excel, but it has significantly reduced my dependence on Windows.

When I installed Fedora, I thought I would constantly have to switch back to Windows. Three months later, that happens less and less. I still need Windows for some applications, macros, and specific processes, but I now do almost all of my daily work on Linux.
