Do Case Manufacturers Understand Physics?

Why are the bottoms of cases hollow immediately after the front fans? Do they expect air to not escape but go to the components by itself? The top is okay if you're using an AIO, but almost none include a way to block sections of it off if you're using an air cooler or a small AIO either.

Last build was before COVID, so I'm a bit confused about modern cases.
