"It starts… good. It always starts good.

The scent of Kalina’s coffee, sharp and familiar, cuts through the command center’s sterile air. She’s humming, placing the mug on my desk with a soft click. “Another long night, Shikikan-sama? Try not to spill this one.” Her smile is real. It’s warm. For a moment, everything is exactly as it was. The tactical map glows softly, dotted with the friendly green icons of my T-Dolls. SOPMOD is enthusiastically explaining a recent mission to M16, who just shakes her head with a wry grin. RO635 stands nearby, a quiet, steady presence. They’re all here. They’re safe.

This is the memory I try to hold onto. The peace I thought I was fighting for.

But the dream never lets me stay.

The light from the map begins to stutter, the green icons flickering one by one into a hostile, pulsing red. The hum of the servers deepens into a low, pained groan. Kalina’s smile doesn’t fade, but it stretches, becomes thin and brittle. “You promised you’d always lead us to victory, you promised we'd always stick together,” she says, but her voice is wrong. It’s an echo of itself. “You promised. Was that a lie?”

The coffee in the mug isn’t coffee anymore. It’s black, thick like crude oil, and it’s overflowing, spilling over the desk, dripping onto the floor with a sickening, sticky sound.

“We trusted you,” M4's voice, but I can’t see her. It’s coming from everywhere. It’s laced with a static of pain. “You were our Commander. Why did you leave me here? Why am I so alone?”

The scene fractures. I’m not in the command room anymore. I’m in a field of broken machinery, the air filled with smoke and thick with the smell of iron. A blue butterfly pin reflects in the dim light. Lunasia. Her name is a weight in my chest, a failure I can’t ever reach. She’s out there because of the path I set in motion. Because I couldn't do enough.

UMP45 steps out from behind a shattered concrete slab, her expression unreadable. “You thought running away would make us free?\~” she asks, her voice flat, devoid of its usual sly humor. “You just left us to clean up the mess. Paradeus wasn’t finished with us. They’re never finished. You knew that.\~”

The urge to justify myself quickly overcomes me. "It was the only way,” I say, my voice straining. “My presence was a catalyst for suffering. Every operation, every victory… it just painted a larger target on your backs. I had to make you all free of me.”

“Free?” Another voice, sharp and laced with fury. It’s ST AR-15, her optical sight a burning red point in the gloom. “You call this free? Scattered? Abandoned? M4 sacrificed herself because you couldn't do anything more!"

A reflection forms. It's me, from way back then, clad in the deep red Griffin trench coat. But its eyes were just as tired as my own. It spoke to me: “Why do you regret it? You thought it was the right thing. A noble sacrifice. Was it? Or were you just a coward? You saw the cost of war written on their faces and you ran from it.”

The world dissolves into a cacophony of accusing voices, overlapping, screaming.

“You broke your promise!”

“We needed you!”

“You left us!”

“Do you think you can ever come back? After this?”

“You’d only get us all killed.”

The nightmare reaches its peak. The friendly, smiling faces of Anti-Rain are now contorted in masks of betrayal and pain, their weapons raised not at an enemy, but at me. The coffee is blood. The map is on fire. And my reflection just watches, a ghost of a man who thought he was doing the right thing, now drowning in the devastating consequences."

A jolt. A hard, physical lurch.

The screams fade. The fire dies.

The Commander’s eyes snapped open, a cold sweat plastering his hair to his forehead. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the sudden, overwhelming silence. Not the silence of peace, but the hollow silence of isolation.

The air smelled of recycled oxygen and motor oil from the last vector engine maintenance. Harsh, angular shadows were cast by a single dimmed console light. He was slumped in his chair of the Elmo, the low hum of its engine a constant, grounding reminder.

"Shikikannnn!\~ Did you steal my rice wine again!? Uwahhhh, I've been saving up for months to try and get my hands on those new bottles...! Uuu!" The hysterical cries of a youthful brown haired girl filled the Operation Room as the mechanical doors slid open with a hiss, Groza and the rest of the squad following closeby.. Funny how history rhymes a little sometimes.. And as surreal as it felt..

He was here. In the present. In a different life.
