Suggestions please - Reliable/economical town runaround

I've been driving my 2007 Zafira B 1.8 petrol VVT now for 2, nearly 3 years, coming up to 120K miles on the clock. I've got her to a very good place mechanically and find I really enjoy working on her. She's fairly easy to repair and a doddle to service, a true multi utility vehicle. Tip runs, furniture collection/transport, beach runs, motorway trips, she does it all. I'll be keeping her until she heads to the scrap yard.

She'll get around 28-36MPG depending on the type of driving.

I'm looking for a smaller more economical town runaround with low tax that's much more economical on fuel. Something spacious enough to fit my fat arse in whilst also beingcomfortable (6ft 3, 20 stone), space for a high back booster in the back and the missus, as well as throwing the shopping in the boot, good safety rating, reliable engine and is easy to work on mechanically and service (I'll do this myself 99% of the time).

Really not fussed about the age of the vehicle or bells and whistles, budget is £2-5K, not looking for Ferrari or anything fancy! For reference I bought the Zafira for £2K.
