How To Do a Noir Riddler

I like many people waaaaaaas not very impressed by how Caped Crusader decided to handle the Riddler, particularly so because it literally took me something like two seconds to figure out exactly how he should be utilized in its sort of setting:

Pattern the Riddler off of Professor Moriarty

He should be someone who puts the mastermind in criminal mastermind, not some gun crazy gangster but a genuine genius who coordinates vast swaths of the criminal underworld from the shadows before Batman presumably forces him to start showing himself. Hell, you can even keep the alternative meaning of the Riddler name by making it so anyone who crosses him ultimately winds up getting absolutely riddled with bullets to set an example for everyone else. Or maybe he occasionally holds subordinates at gunpoint for one reason or another where they’re forced to correctly answer some riddle or else get their brains blown out primarily just as a means of proving why it’s the Riddler who’s calling the shots.

The fact this came so easily to me just makes the Caped Crusader adaptation all the more aggravating by comparison.
